There is a way to over come post traumatic stress but for now it means you have to suffer a unique form of brain damage. It appears that it’s because of damage to part of one womans brain could help scientists discover treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Research published in Current Biology showed the woman felt no fear in a variety of scary situations.

These included exposure to snakes and spiders, horror films and a “haunted house”.

The woman feels other emotions but said as an adult, she had never felt afraid.

She is the first known case of someone who is unable to process fear.

Researchers at the University of Iowa said her inability to feel frightened was because she has damage to a structure in her brain called the amygdala.

The structure has long been associated with emotional learning – experiments in animals have shown that removing it makes them fearless.

However, it has never been observed in a human before. Tarantula risk

The woman experienced fear as a child and knows that some situations should be frightening.

As an adult she has been in various frightening situations, including being threatened with a knife and held at gunpoint.

These did not make her afraid.

Researchers at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, observed and recorded the woman’s responses in situations that would make most people feel fear.

She watched a series of horror films, went to a reputedly haunted house and to an exotic pet store – where she handled dangerous snakes and asked to handle a tarantula.

She showed no fear in any of the situations and had to be prevented from touching the tarantula because of the high risk of being bitten.

When asked why she wanted to touch something that she knows is dangerous, she replied that she was overcome with curiosity.

Lead researcher Justin Feinstein said: “Because she is missing her amygdala, she is also missing the ability to detect and avoid danger in the world.

“It is quite remarkable that she is still alive.”

Adam Perkins, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London who specialises in researching the causal basis of anxiety and fear looked at the research.

He said the study was interesting because it suggested the amygdala is the neural seat of fear – and specifically responsible for generating feelings of fear, rather than emotions in general.

The researchers hope that by studying the woman they can understand how the brain processes fear.

This could be useful in treating patients suffering from PTSD – such as soldiers who have been serving in conflict areas.

Mr Feinstein added: “Their lives are marred by fear and they are often-times unable to even leave their home due to the ever-present feeling of danger.”

By studying the woman, researchers hope to create treatments that selectively target the brain areas that can sometimes allow fear to take over.

Psychiatrists are the successors of “soul doctors”, priests who dealt and deal with the spiritual conundrums, dilemmas, and vexations – the “problems in living” – that have troubled people forever.”

The United States nowadays is the Land of Importunity, obsessed with the Self. It’s an area inhospitable to genuine cynics.

The true cynic refuses to put too nice a value on anything, his own person included. He isn’t at home in this republic, which flies the flag of Self-Esteem. He could be a stranger to the society of family values, forced geniality, compulsory inoffensiveness.

The Cynic’s Creed goes one thing like this:

1) Place your faith in man. You can be certain that, sooner or later, he’ll let you down. A corollary to the current is:

2) Do not believe anyone, or something, you hear while not sufficient evidence. Rely upon facts, not emotions. And furthermore:

3) Avoid experts in the least costs. Keep in mind that nobody knows a lot of about anything.

4) Face facts, however disheartening. Try to appear life squarely in the face. As Bierce wrote, strive to “see things as they are, not as they should be.”

5) Respect your limitations. Consider the chance that you might not be the apple of some god’s eye. Humbly admit that, contrary to well-liked sentiment, you can not do, or be, anything you want. Even a milking-cow knows it cannot climb the Matterhorn.

6) Make it so that the only thing that will truly surprise you is kind and caring person.

7) Finally, do not worry concerning your self-esteem. You are as insignificant as anyone else.

All of that said, I do think you will do better in life if you PRIVATELY think of yourself as some form of mortal god-being that was forced to live in an insignificant human body. Why? Because it puts your cynicism into a nicely packed perspective. That way you have good reason to believe you’re better than everyone else and even more reason NOT to tell anyone why.

Ways to Quit Smoking

I know, it’s true… there are so many available ways to quit smoking on the market. But how do you find one that works? This article aims at explaining the most common of them, suggests other different approaches like creative visualization and meditation and outlines some suggestions to use when selecting a method to quit.

But wait… you may wonder, shouldn’t there be a single method that could work in every case? I’m going to be honest with you, although I am aware I will upset some “gurus” who claim their program has a success rate of 100%. The truth is that there is no universal way to quit smoking for the simple reason that people are DIFFERENT!

You see, each of us shares a different cultural background, social conditioning or mental patterns and tendencies when it comes to smoking. Some of us smoke to alleviate stress, others to overcome boredom and still others to better enjoy their social situations.

Some are deeply aware of the health effects and want to quit smoking mainly because of that, while for others the financial aspect is becoming an issue of concern.

You can also easily spot differences among people simply by paying attention to the different types of cars they buy, the types of partners they fall in love with or the vast array of other personal preferences. From all this, you can easily come to the logical conclusion that indeed there should be many ways to quit smoking tailored to different types of people.

Cold Turkey
This method requires quitting smoking abruptly without using any nicotine patch, pill or any other aid. Studies reveal that when a person attempts to quit smoking cold turkey, strong motivational factors are involved. Also, in order for the method to be effective, you must allow for a preparation period in which, for example, you can get enough motivation or develop some amount of will power.

Hypnosis
The method has recently started to gain in popularity mainly due to its simplicity and presumable efficacy. Wow! So many methods…how should I choose one? My advice is to use you emotional intelligence when you try to select one of the ways to quit smoking presented here. In other words, choose one that “feels” right for you.
