My Secret Of Happiness
Everyone wants a simple solution to the complex problems of life. Here is my solution to happiness.
It might be simplistic to reduce life and happiness to mathematical terms but that is just what I’m going to do. The terms are “variables” and “constants”.
Just like an algebraic equation there are, in life, variables and constants.
The variables in life change. They can be jobs, lovers, friends or cars. Variables can also be your latest goal, or your new favorite food. Given enough time it is certain that something about these variables will change. They may even disappear completely, they are, after all, variables.
Constants are well, constant. They don’t change.
Okay, that’s enough math talk. Let’s talk about happiness.
What I see all the time is people focusing on the variables to be happy and completely forgetting that the constants exist. In fact, most people respond to the constants as annoyances they either have to ignore or endure. To them the constants are: bills, taxes and worry.
Is it any wonder their lives have only short term happiness?
People CAN gain control of the constants in life. In fact, they can choose the constants that they want to live by and which will permeate their lives and use them like a compass to guide their lives.
A visible example of this is the Duggar family on “19 Kids And Counting”. Personally, my system overloads with saccharin sweetness and I get nauseous watching them but I do have admiration for how they demonstrate faith and love of family as their personal constants.
Let’s suppose you don’t want to be like the Duggar’s, where do you start?
I’ll give you a couple of constants I’ve used and while I always encourage people to find their own constants in life, the ones I’ll recommend are pretty darned good. Here they are:
1) “You are always loved.”
2) “You have a purpose.”
I’ve tested it out and these two constants are likely to be the best I can think of without falling into the realm of religious doctrine. That means anyone can use them until or unless they find something better.
Why do these two constants work so darned well? Let’s look at each of them.
“You are always loved.”
This fulfills a basic need for which we are all longing; to be loved and accepted. If you begin with this as a life constant there is little that will stop you. You won’t need approval from someone else or to heal wounds that happened during childhood. Know you are always loved fixes that.
“You have a purpose.”
A purpose is what will guide your actions. Sometimes the action you need to do is to simply wait and be patient. When everything you do is guided by purpose waiting is easy.
So, what if you don’t know what your purpose is? You have two choices: pick your life purpose or create it yourself but do it with the understand that your purpose will guide all your actions and behaviors. It will be your polar star during the wild storms of life.
Do this and you will notice that life becomes simple. The things that most other people worry over fall into the category of Variables. You will have them too but you will experience them differently, as things that will not distract you. You will deal with them as they come based on the Constants you have chosen.
