Beginner’s Guide To NLP Techniques
Have you heard of Neuro Linguistic Programming but are unsure what it actually is? This article looks at some of the most common NLP techniques that can help you develop good relationships and improve your life. One of the best techniques is all about developing good goals. You do this by being positive and thinking about what you want and how to get it, rather than thinking negatively. So, stop focusing on what you don’t want and your problems and focus on positive outcomes instead.
NLP is also really useful for teaching you about ‘good’ eye contact and you can learn how make people feel more comfortable in your presence by adapting to their preferred methods of eye contact. For instance, there are some people who don’t like to be looked at for any length of time and others who find it odd when you don’t look at them. The technique involves learning how to tell what they like and fitting in to their needs and making them comfortable.
NLP also places a lot of emphasis on building rapport. This is all about developing good relationships with other people and working with them so that they trust you. One way this is done is through the tone of your voice, as people can often be comforted and reassured if you match their tone of voice as it shows you’re on the same wavelengths. NLP practitioners also focus on similarities in body language and take note of subtle body movements in order to make people feel at ease.
You can also learn a lot from body language, as suggested above, and one common NLP technique is to use body language to work out when people are intentionally or unintentionally concealing something for you. NLP practitioners are good at observing the way people act and they pick up on their habits really quickly. Things like muscle movements, eye contact, tone of voice and skin tone can all be really revealing with the people you work with, so make sure you pay attention.
One final common NLP technique is all about discovering your anchors. Anchors are things that trigger responses in you, such as the desire for food after watching a food commercial. In NLP, they are most commonly used to lift bad moods and alleviate negative reactions. This involves identifying the anchors that cause you to feel depressed in certain situations as once you are aware of them, you can have more success and neutralizing them and ultimately moving on from them.
