Don’t Manage Stress – Manage Responses!

August 6th, 2009 by Susan Watson, CHt.

Three main problems cause people to seek out a hypnotist.

Smoking cessation, weight loss, stress management.

Each of these is testimony to the grave difficulty of changing behavior that is detrimental to our health and well-being.

Smoking is a physical addiction brought on, at first, by peer pressure and marketing experts.

We can modify our eating behavior but we cannot quit.

The foundation, though, to achieving the first two is number three ” managing the everyday stresses of life in positive ways as alternatives to overeating and smoking.

We all know that stress is both good and bad depending on how a person deals with it. It is part of life. The behaviors ” smoking, drug use, financial, alcohol abuse ” are negative responses to stress. I wont go into any mind numbing theory about why. Lets just say they are a complex jumble of conscious thoughts and subconscious mechanisms that lay beneath them. Those thoughts can be controlled by you and the behavior can be stopped or changed.

So response management is really what we mean when we say stress management. Hypnosis is a way of exploring those subconscious mechanisms to realign them with your conscious thoughts. This can help you get on the right track in your responses ” and quit those things that are harming you.

As a result of a hypnosis session, some clients discover talents and abilities they werent aware they had. Hypnosis utilizes the individuals strengths and resources to create the world they want to experience. Nowhere is this more important than changing harmful responses.

These are frequently asked questions about hypnosis.

Will my mind be controlled by someone?

You are the one in control of your mind. No one else can do that and hypnosis will actually give you more control.

What about free will?

When you’re hypnotized you don’t lose your personality, your free will or your personal strength. Hypnosis is a relaxed state in which suggestions are presented for the outcome for which you desire. You are always free to accept or to not accept those suggestions.

What if I can’t be hypnotized?

Typically, the only people that cannot be hypnotized are those that don’t want to be. Anyone else can easily enter into a state of deep hypnosis with a skilled hypnotist/hypnotherapist.

What is the danger?

Hypnosis is generally no more distressing than daydreaming. If you read the medical literature or ask for case studies, you’ll see that hypnosis is no more dangerous than taking an aspirin.

Will I be asleep?

You are just relaxed but fully awake and aware.

A better response to stress can be achieved through the sense of calm focus provided in a hypnotic state.
