Supercharging Your Copywriting Skills

I was recently reading a book titled, “Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else.” In it, I learned a few lessons for copywriters.

The main idea of the book is that it’s not innate talent or experience that forge greatness. Most people think it’s hard work that makes you good at something but that’s not really true either.

The author says the big difference is something he calls “deliberate practice.” It’s more than regular practice. A good way to explain that is in considering how most adult city league soccer teams practice. A few practice deliberately and most either just practice or do nothing.

Most soccer teams don’t have a coach. If they actually practice as a team they simply divide up into 2 groups, set up two small goals and then play until people get tired. Do we get better doing that? Not really. Is it fun? Usually so. That’s why we keep doing it.

I was on a team once where a friend and I were able to convince the other players we needed to do some skill specific drills. We practiced playing keep away where the goal is to maintain possession of the ball. We put goals in the middle that had to be dribbled through. We put a limit on the number of times we could touch the ball before passing. We played offense against defense with each playing in our game formations.

All these drills challenged us in game specific ways. And while I played with that team, we moved up 4 divisions. I’ve seen other teams do that as well. It’s really not hard to be better than everyone else. It simply takes deliberate practice.

What can you do as a copywriter? Most people have heard you ought to copy other good letters so you get the language into your system. The author suggested 3 models for practicing: the music model, the chess model and the sports model.

Music Model

When you perform music, you know exactly what it’s supposed to sound like and you rehearse it. If you get hung up at a part, you step back and rehearse that part until it’s perfect. In copywriting, that’s what we’re doing when we copy other good letters. But we have two other ways to improve as well.

Chess Model

Evidently the way you learn to be great at chess is to use the “what you would do in this situation” model. That’s also how Harvard Business School teaches… through case studies. You look at specific scenarios and try to figure out what you would have done. Then you compare that to what actually happened.

For a copywriter, we can re-write letters. How would you have handled a particular selling approach differently? You can pick a product, write a letter for it and then see how it compares to the real one. You can critique letters if you don’t want to actually write an entirely new one.

If you’d like a quicker exercise, break it down to smaller elements. How would you rewrite just a headline or some bullets? There are plenty of smaller opportunities if you want to test yourself against PPC ads or catalog copy. Pick out something you own, write about it then compare that to how they describe it online somewhere.

Sports Model

Sports teams condition themselves for specific skills. For copywriting, you can build your swipe file and analyze each letter. You can take courses. You can read books. You can cross train in fields like sales, story telling, NLP and hypnosis, logic and debate. You can getting mentoring.

A Brief Introduction To Neuro Linguistic Programing

Neuro linguistic programing, also known as NLP is a type of psychotherapy which involves interpersonal communication. This is done by monitoring body language and facial expression as well as posture and speech. The ability to monitor body language amongst other things, means that you can better understand person is saying or whether there is truth in what they are saying.

Neuro linguistic programing claims to allow people to see and learn certain things about the subject that would normally be hidden. It gives an insight into what the subject is thinking about, what they are feeling and sometimes even if they’re telling the truth. NLP simply relies on the theory that about 90% of human communication is not speech. It claims to be able to translate to some extent, the other forms of communication that we unwittingly use every time we talk.

Neuro linguistic programing is considered a way of self improvement. It may also be used as a form of psychological therapy addressing issues such as phobias, depression or bad habits and learning disorders. There are a great number of techniques involved in NLP with a lot of them having originated from hypnosis.

NLP is widely rejected by the scientific community. This is because there is absolutely no scientific proof that NLP is actually an effective method although, it has not been entirely disproven either. Because of its lack of credibility in professional spheres, it remains omitted from mainstream psychotherapy and academic psychology.

In spite of this, however, there is still quite a large following of NLP and it is often still used by private psychologists and enthusiasts. There are many people who claim that it is actually an effective method of self improvement and psychotherapy and as of yet, it has not been entirely disproved by science either. It remains popular in the self-help industry as well as certain private counselling.

First Steps To Know How To Hypnotize Yourself

Hypnosis can be used in everyday life for many purposes. Some people do it to relax and others do it to clear their mind. Anyone can learn how to hypnotize themselves, you just need the determination to do it. Here is how to hypnotize yourself for beginners.

Before you start your session think what you want to get from it. You might want to program your mind to be accepting of new ideas or you might just want to unwind. Then find a spot when you can practice your hypnosis in peace and lay down, or sit if you prefer. Close the eyes and breath slowly and deeply.

Next begin to tell each and every part of your body to relax. You might want to start at your feet and work your way slowly up your body. Telling each part individually to go limp and fully relaxed. This might take some time but be sure that you have fully relaxed each part of your body. During this time you should feel as though you would almost be unable to move as you are so relaxed.

The next stage is to slowly count down from the number ten to the number one. Try not to speak out loud during this as it will break your concentration. By the time you are at number one you should be hypnotized and feel very calm and undisturbed.

Whilst you are there you can stay relaxed or you can begin to think about what you would like to be in your subconscious. The choice is yours. As soon as you want to be back in reality you should count from the number one up to the number ten. When you reach the number ten you need to tell yourself to wake up and be alert. Then you will have achieved self hypnosis – so do this when you can.
