Others simply want to be healthier and avoid potential health problems such as Lung Caner and COPD. There is always a reason to quit, and BBC News just added one more, dental problems.</p>
<p>Along with the obvious health risks with smoking such as lung cancer and heart disease, this new study shows an increase in oral cancers, diminished ability of taste buds and rejection of certain dental procedures. Smoking can also cause the gums to recede, leaving the roots of the tooth exposed.</p>
<p>People who are missing teeth or have lost a tooth due to an accident rely heavily on dental devices such as dentures and implants to improve their oral health. Implants are a new alternative to dentures of the past. Implants work similar to dentures, as they provide a false tooth to replace a missing one. They are used in people who have lost individual teeth, or to create a bridge and for better support to older dentures. Implants work by functioning as the &#8220;root&#8221; of the tooth because they are made from titanium and are implanted in the jaw. They are coated with a substance called hydroxyapatite which acts as the same chemical makeup of our own bones making the implants more effective than dentures.</p>
<p>Not everyone is a candidate for implants however. A prime candidate requires good healing and blood flow to insure the gum tissue heals properly without infection or rejection of the implant. Implant rejection happens more commonly in smokers. Smoking as well as other diseases such as diabetes, effect how the body heals and how the blood flows, thus resulting in a likely rejection.</p>
<p>Implant rejection is not the only problem tobacco users face when it comes to dental care. Other procedures which are effected by smoking can be something as simple as a filling, teeth removals, and gum disease. Antibiotics and topical treatments can also become useless because of smoking which can lead to more serious problems before, during and after dental procedures.</p>
<p>Bad breath and teeth discoloration are fairly minor problems resulting from smoking, however these minor problems can turn more serious quickly. There are certain protocols in place for patients to follow before surgery such as no food twelve hours before surgery and nothing to drink. However, many physicians and anesthesiologists require their patients to quit smoking for at least two weeks before and after surgery.</p>

By smoking the patient is increasing the carbon monoxide which attaches to the hemoglobin in the blood which will decrease oxygen in the blood. The heart will not function properly because of the increased carbon monoxide and blood will not get where it needs to.</p>

<p>Example:</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s just use a younger you for the example, 10-14 years old. And for this example, let&#8217;s use the habit of smoking. If you don&#8217;t smoke&#8230;. replace the word &#8220;smoking&#8221; with any craving you get, or just pretend you smoke? It is an article about smoking after all.</p>
<p>So when you were around that age I think we can safely assume you were learning about life and how you fit into it. If you were like most kids, you weren&#8217;t as confident about yourself as you would be later in life.</p>
<p>You may have felt self-conscious, dependent on others, powerless, not good enough, or just not as capable as you would have liked to feel. Let&#8217;s call this feeling &#8220;bad&#8221;. Now, this doesn&#8217;t mean you felt miserable, but, did you feel as &#8220;good&#8221; as you wanted to feel? Did you feel as &#8220;good&#8221; as you believed other people felt?</p>
<p>Maybe, maybe not. If you sometimes felt &#8220;bad&#8221; you probably wanted to feel better, you wanted to feel &#8220;good&#8221;. What your mind would see as an answer to this problem would depend upon your experiences and life lessons up to that point. Right?</p>
<p>Maybe you had authority figures in your young life that smoked, like parents, relatives, friends, advertisements, role models. At this point in your life, smoking would have been seen as tough, strong, independent, self-assured, unique, &#8220;good&#8221;. Repetitively exposed to the thing you felt your life lacked.</p>
<p>Your mind would develop a craving for the very thing it believes is in your best interest. The thing that will make you feel better. A craving that is a &#8220;feeling&#8221;, separate from a &#8220;knowing&#8221;.</p>
<p>Then you tried your first cigarette, and chances are that you weren&#8217;t so good at smoking. That would come with practice.</p>
<p>Life goes on and you continue practicing your smoking habit. Reinforcing the existing cravings and creating new ones. Like branches on the tree of the first craving.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;ve tried to stop smoking before, you may have already thought of these things. And you&#8217;ve spent time thinking and analyzing your habit. But, you didn&#8217;t learn this habit by thinking and analyzing, so why would trying to quit smoking that way?</p>
<p>It is common sense to quit smoking using the same elements that created the habit. A &#8220;hypnotized&#8221; mind, along with emotions, authority figures and repetition. These are the elements of modern hypnosis.</p>
