Healthy Foods Becoming More Common

December 31st, 2008 by Patrick Glancy, BCH

Healthy lifestyle trends are popping up in many areas of this country. Many restaurants are offering healthier alternatives, fast food restaurants are disclosing nutritional information and public schools are ripping out soda machines and replacing them with water machines. Attitudes toward exercise are getting more positive, diet has been replaced by the phrase “healthy lifestyle” and the word “organic” is now understood by many. America has spoken, it is time for a change of lifestyle!

American’s like to eat out but eating out does not have to mean sacrificing your health or diet. Wendy’s and Subway were some of the first fast food restaurants to offer healthy substitutions for children and adults. At Wendy’s a salad can replace fries for no extra charge. For a kid’s meal, parents can order their children a fruit cup and milk instead of fries and a soda. Subway also has raisins and apples in place of chips. Another chain is seeing their competitors success and making a change! Fatburger recently changed from vegetable oil to soy bean oil to fry their foods therefore reducing the amount of trans fat being served. Fatburger will also start using the leanest beef possible in all of their burgers and they are now offering a Boca patty (soy based meatless patty) substitute for all their burgers according to prleap.com. Even sit down restaurants such as Applebee’s are jumping on the band wagon by offering Weight Watcher friendly menu items.

In past years many chains such as McDonalds had the public guessing about nutritional content but after a large public out cry, fast food and sit down restaurants relented. Now the nutritional information can be found anywhere from their internet websites, pamphlets in the place, or on the actual container such as McDonald’s fries carton. There is no more guess work to be done, consumers know exactly what they are eating, no more mystery meat!

The public is not stopping there, they also pushed for healthy reform in America’s schools. During the 2006-2007 school year, every district in America had a goal to obtain. This goal was to implement a better nutrition and increase activity levels according to aappolicy.org, and nearly every school accomplished this. Soda machines, snack machine and pizza are gone in every American school. They have been replaced by water, granola and a salad bar. Kids can no longer sell junk food for clubs during school hours and all the cafeterias are required to serve balanced meals.

Organic has become a household name for many Americans. In the last ten years, local farmers have more than doubled. Organic products appeals to the new health conscious America on many levels. Consumers want to know where their food is coming form and if it has been chemically treated. When buying food from local farmers, it gives the consumer control and they can find out where the food has come from and what it has been exposed to. As a result many cities across America have local farmers markets which sell only organic foods.

Organic foods are also here to stay! In the last ten years, local farmers have more than doubled. Consumers want to know where their food is coming form and if it has been chemically treated. When buying food from local farmers, it gives the consumer control, they can find out where the food has come from and what it has been exposed to.

Many consumers are also adopting a new type of “diet” called flexitarianism according to CNN.com. Dietitians are defining these dieters as those who eat mainly fruits and vegetables but also eat protein but only three days per week such as chicken, lean beef and fish. It is a diet which is low in saturated fat and high in fiber. Those who follow this diet have lower risk of stroke, diabetes, and heart attack.

America is ready to make a stand. Obesity causes stress for individual families, the pubic and healthcare providers. Of course there will be those out there who love eating their greasy pizzas and triple Whoppers. But for those who do not want to gain hundreds of pounds, there are now options. People are now given the choice when the once did not have one and America responded and healthy living is taking over.

Easy Steps to Stress Relief

December 28th, 2008 by Sara Mendez

Stress is a state of mind and the best way to combat stress and its effects on the mind is through relaxation. Stress can cause many problems such as concentration issues, lack of good judgment, negativity and lack of productivity as well as many health issues such as heart attacks and chronic headaches. The best way to combat these feelings and factors of stress is through relaxation. Relaxation takes as little as ten minutes a day and can be as simple as breathing exercises, or as challenging as a kick boxing class, the choice is yours.

Work, marriage and money are just a few things which can cause stress in peoples day to day lives. Often people get so busy and think they have no time to relax. They can also be fooled into thinking that they need to do something extreme or go someplace such as going on vacation to relax. These people are mistaken, relaxation can happen at home, in the office or while driving. The key is to train the mind to relax.

Finding the best method can be the hardest challenge on your road to relaxation. First you need to decide what sorts of things you enjoy. It could be a range of things such as surfing the web, reading, meditating or walking.

One of the best ways to relax is to escape to a different world, and since not all of us have passports, an easy way to do this is through music, reading and watching TV or movies. These visual stimulators offer a break from the boring day to day lives in which so many of us live. They each create an alternative world that is entirely your own.

Meditation can help you learn to control your body’s reaction to stress through reflection and deep breathing exercises. These techniques must be learned and practiced regularly to insure maximum results. You can achieve full relaxation through ten minutes of meditation, and most people have ten minutes to spare in their busy lives.

Other people prefer to hit the gym to relax. Some like to run, walk or lift weights. Others might prefer a cycling, kick boxing or tai chi class. Running and walking burn off excessive built up energy, however not everyone wants to run a marathon. For them there are other sorts of classes which sole purpose is relaxation such as yoga. Many people choose to skip the classes and gym all together and simply walk their dogs in the park.

The most important thing to remember when it comes to relaxation is practice. It is important to have patience! Listen to your mind and body, learn what is working for you and make note of what is not. Keep yourself motivated by remembering you are on your way to a happier and healthier lifestyle, also remember how good it feels to be doing something enjoyable.

Teaching your body something new is always a challenge, however once you get the hang of it, it is like riding a bike, your body won’t forget how. It is important to find an activity which you enjoy and know you will stick with, but you must make a conscious effort to remind and train your body to relax while performing this task. It may take time, but in the end the rewards will be fantastic for your mind, body and lifestyle.

Weight Loss-Do it the Right Way

December 27th, 2008 by Patrick Glancy, BCH

Obesity in America is out of control. According to the CDC, in 2006 only four states had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. This trend is happening not only here in America, but abroad as well. People gain weight for many reasons. Often they do not know proper portions, enjoy snacking or have emotional attachments to food, or could suffer from a food addiction. Weight loss can be intimidating, especially if you have a significant amount of weight to lose. However, weight loss can be easily attained if you go about it the right way.

Everyone could benefit from knowing what a proper portion is. Every time you eat at a restaurant, you are greeted by large unrealistic portions. Take a “dinner salad” for example, it can contain two portions instead of the implied single portion. By eating more portions than you should can obviously cause you to gain weight.

Portions are out of control everywhere. No one knows what an ounce of chicken truly is, many put their trust in restaurants to give them proper portions, and sadly this does not happen often. The portions found at restaurants are grossly exaggerated, and now more than ever people are eating out which fuels this problem. This issue obviously causes you to gain weight.

People who are food addicts are usually completely out of control and unable to know if they are truly hungry or simply having a craving. Food addiction is an issue that is finally making its way into the forefront of weight gain. Often times, food addicts have become so because of a habit. Once you address this habit, you are able to regain control and focus this energy on something else such as weight loss and exercise. Unfortunately people who suffer from this have a hard time identifying this as the source of their weight gain. Unless you identify the problem you can not find a solution.

It is difficult to figure out why you over eat, make bad food choices or snack without help. Hypnosis has proven to be a highly effective tool in the battle against weight loss. Hypnosis is not a short term fix, many have experienced long term success because hypnosis deals with the actual triggers and attachments to food that could hold you back with other short term plans. It confronts food addiction head on by giving an answer to the “why am I eating so much” question that many food addicts deal with day in and day out. This treatment deals with all the behaviors you are unable to deal with through regular diet and exercise.

After your first session you will instantly feel rejuvenated and energized. Hypnosis helps you to crave other things such as exercise, healthy food and other activities. Your energy will return to allow you to find joy in new activities and hobbies. You will feel more happy and relaxed that you are doing something about your problem instead of doing nothing at all. You will no longer feel the need to eat unhealthy things and sit at home on the couch feeling helpless.

Think about how different you life will be, think of all the fun things you will be doing instead of eating and the new attitude you will have toward food and food choices. You need to find a plan that fits with you and your lifestyle. Don’t allow yourself to be one more in the obesity epidemic, be a better healthier you. There is no time like to present to make a decision to change you life.

Weight Loss-Make it Easy

December 24th, 2008 by Patrick Glancy, BCH

For all the reasons people gain weight, there are just as many reasons to lose weight. According to the CDC, in 2006 only four states had a prevalence of obesity less than 20%. Obesity is at an all time high in America and beyond and the reasons for this epidemic are endless. There are many reasons people gain weight, it could be snacking, portion issues, or food addiction.

Snacking between meals is very common. Often people aren’t eating the right things at meal times, and become hungry quickly. You need to know what foods are good for you and why you are hungry in the first place. Some times people snack when they are not hungry, maybe because they are nervous, bored or stressed. It is important to address these issues before you can be successful in weight loss.

Snacking between meals can be another problem. Some people deal with their emotions by snacking. Think about times you may have been snacking, were you nervous, were you bored or maybe you were stressed. These emotional connections often cause you to turn to food and snack when you are not hungry. Once you learn to control these feelings and can identify the triggers associated with them, you will find weight loss easy to attain.

There is good news when it comes to dealing with the battle of the bulge. Hypnosis has proven to be a highly effective tool. Hypnosis is not a short term fix, many have experienced long term success because hypnosis deals with the actual triggers and attachments to food that could hold you back with other short term plans. It is difficult to figure out why you over eat, make bad food choices or snack without help. Hypnosis can help with this. This treatment deals with all the behaviors you are unable to deal with through regular diet and exercise.

Hypnosis helps you to crave other things such as exercise, healthy food and other activities. You will notice your energy returning, you will feel more happy and relaxed that you are doing something about your problem instead of doing nothing at all. You will no longer feel the need to eat unhealthy things and sit at home on the couch. It is a wonderful feeling indeed.

Think about how different you life could be in just a few short sessions. Think of all the things you could be doing instead of eating. You need to find a pan that fits with you and your lifestyle. Don’t allow yourself to be one more in the obesity epidemic, be a better healthier you. There is no time like to present to make a decision to change you life. There are plans out there than can help you, make your choice.

Habits of My Own

December 17th, 2008 by Patrick Glancy

Comfort food is something we crave when we are tired, sad, lonely, stressed or even happy. We all have our own favorite comfort food, for me it is Jack in the Box tacos. If you had this food as an adult for the first time, you would never eat it again, but still you are drawn to it. It is just not logical!

In reality the logic is simple, you have an emotional attachment to the food you are eating. I can justify eating my favorite tacos because I think it will make me feel happy, content or calm, I am guessing you feel the same way about your food. You know the food is not good for you, but subconsciously you think it will. After a while you begin to believe the food will make you feel better and because our mind believes this, you do feel better, but the effect is short lived.

As the taco is disappearing, a bite at a time, the guilt kicks in. You might have guessed this does not stop me from eating one taco, or even my second! I am sure you know this feeling, and it is very frustrating. I know I should not be eating the greasy and oddly textured taco, but I really feel like eating it. I have the same cravings, longing and urge to devour that taco, the same as you.

Annihilating the taco, is a habit and this habit was learned through different ways. For me, I remember being very young, seven or eight years old maybe. I was on the way to the beach in Southern California with my family. I remember my mom and aunt, talking about Jack in the Box tacos. They talked about how good and greasy they are. They would especially be perfect to buy and take to the beach to eat. We were all happy and having a good time. It was a warm, sunny day at the beach, and we were going to play and enjoy ourselves. We got the tacos and they were the most delicious tacos in the world. I remember some gritty sand getting onto some of my taco but it didn’t matter, we were having a fantastic day. Important memories which are vivid typically are more influential than the everyday mundane memories.

Even today, just the thought of getting a taco from Jack in the Box triggers good feelings which are associated with the memory. Sometimes the actual memory comes with it and sometimes it does not. It is important to understand how we relate feelings to different things in our lives, things like food, music or a voice.

I used to love Aerosmith. I would listen to their songs over and over again, and never get sick of them. All this changed in the 90’s when I took my then girlfriend to an Aerosmith concert. Things did not get well and since then I don’t care for their music, each song reminds me of her. This is just another example of how memories can influence simple things in our lives.

It’s SoCal, the 70’s, my family has a van with pin stripes, and the interior was tangerine orange with matching carpet. Yes it makes me laugh too! I was about six years old and encountered a large black widow spider in this van. My parents made me and my brothers’ get out of the van quickly. For years I had an embarrassing fear of spiders. I was able to link it to this memory. I am now able to kill spiders, but if I see a big one I still get nervous, but nothing like it use to be.

When I hear my wife yelling my name, I know it is time for me to hide in the garage or look busy fast! Sometimes a stern voice makes me feel like I did something wrong or I am in trouble. Most people like me, feel like a child, especially when someone uses my first, middle and last name. This is just one more way we associate feelings or emotions, and hold on to those attachments.

Enough about me. The point of all this is to show you common sense examples of learned behaviors. Emotions associated with memories trigger very powerful, behind the scenes reactions and decisions in our minds.

Weight Loss Can Happen

December 11th, 2008 by Sara Mendez

Everywhere you go you are constantly thinking about weight. Whether it is going to the grocery store, reading a magazine, or simply driving by a new fast food restaurant on the corner. It is everywhere we turn, no wonder you are constantly obsessing over your weight. You are not the only one, there are many others who are over weight and they are that way for many reasons. Some people have problems with portion control, food choices, exercise phobia or simply have emotional attachments to food. Try not to worry there is help out there for you.

Portions are difficult to understand for many people. The average person doesn’t know what a proper serving size is for food items in general, so we guess, often that guess is wrong. Think about this, one package of Ramen actually contains two servings. Who would think you could actually get two servings out of that little bag! Understanding and controlling your portions is one of the most important things you will learn while losing weight.

Food choices are also a reason people become over weight. We would all love to eat anything we want and still be skinny but this is not possible for most. We need to decide what our body needs and what it wants. Often people have animosity toward “healthy foods”. You learn these negative associations with healthy food through repetition. Maybe you ate something healthy and it made you sick, so you learned that food is bad, even if it is actually good for you. However you learned this stigma it is considered a learned behavior.

Exercise can be annoying especially if you lack the energy in the first place. We tend to think of weight loss and exercise as last on our life of things to do in the day. The lack of motivation can be hard to over come without help. Exercise is a great way to regain metabolism which will aid you in weight loss and give you more energy during your day. It is hard to get to the gym or go for a walk when you are unmotivated. The key is to learn why you are not motivated and how to fix it so you will like to do fun things like exercise or go for a long walk.

Some people who are over weight have emotional attachments to food. Maybe you eat when you are happy, sad, stressed or as a reward. Whatever the reason, this is an attachment. If you are using ice cream as a comfort food, the time has come for you to think about why you do this. Focus on what triggers the craving for ice cream, why you want it, and figure out how to change the response so you can continue losing weight. Identifying those triggers can be hard without help as they become so ingrained in us after a while.

According to the American Hypnosis Clinic, 93% of people recover after six session of hypnosis for weight loss. Hypnosis allows you to be in control and choose what foods you want to eat, when you want to eat them and how much of that food you will eat. You do not have to fight against a learned behavior or craving. You will simply choose whether or not you want to eat the food or do the exercise. It will deal with emotional triggers, by identifying what the trigger is and help you to have a different reaction. Hypnosis can also help you to have new cravings such as exercise and make you want to lead a healthier, happier life. This about it, after six sessions, food will no longer rule your life.

Losing weight doesn’t have to be a chore or something else on your “to do” list. It can be something that is enjoyable and fun. You will have more energy and simply feel better. You will find yourself excited about your new life and the new you. There are many weight loss plans out there, you need to decide what is right for you. But don’t take too long you new life is waiting.

Weight Reduction… A Heavy Issue

December 9th, 2008 by Theresa Johnson, CHT

The doctors, the dietitians, the nutritionists, the fitness books all say “eating right and exercising more is the key to losing weight.” So why isn’t it that easy? Through my experience as a certified hypnotherapist, I have found that the main reason why the diets and fitness fads have not helped you to create permanent weight loss changes is because you have not truly made a lifestyle change. In order to make a change in one’s daily behaviors, a change needs to be made in one’s perceptions and beliefs. Those perceptions and beliefs, include beliefs about your body image, self worth, and also the beliefs and perceptions about your relationship with food. The beliefs and perceptions related to the behaviors that are keeping you heavy can also be connected to a number of other issues: stress, anxiety, how you react to people, places and events around you, as well as fears and phobias.

Now I am sure that you have heard “if something is not working for you, change what you are doing.” Right? And surely you’ve heard “do what you’ve always done and get what you’ve always got”. Well that is exactly what is happening to most people who have been unable to lose weight effectively and keep it off. They have continued to do what they have always done and they continue to get what they’ve always gotten. Let’s make that statement even more specific “If you THINK what you’ve always THOUGHT, then you will get what you’ve always got.” It is in making the changes in that thinking process, in that belief and perception process, where hypnosis is extremely effective.

Studies have been done that estimate that 75% of our beliefs about ourselves have been imprinted into our subconscious by the age of 7. Therefore, the majority of our personality is determined by the time we are 7. In a hypnotic state an individual can experience age regression, a mental journey back into their past safely and objectively to look at their framework of beliefs that were established at a young age. Then the hypnotist will guide you forward (age progression) bit by bit to review what other beliefs were established based on the original beliefs. These beliefs or perceptions can then be changed as necessary to create beliefs that are in line with one’s conscious desires. Future progression often follows, so you can imagine and experience your life with the changes already in place.

75% of our beliefs about ourselves have been imprinted into our subconscious by the age of 7. Therefore, the majority of our personality is determined by the time we are 7. (That puts a whole new twist to “acting like a child” doesn’t it.) This knowledge is useful for hypnosis age regression. In a hypnotic state an individual can mentally journey back into their past safely and objectively and look at the frame work of beliefs that were established at a young age and then move forward bit by bit to review what other beliefs were established based on the original ones.

The subconscious mind unlike the conscious mind will accept what it hears and if it has been fed negative information for a significant amount of time, it absorbs it as fact. It is very much like the mind of a young child. It believes what it hears. The subconscious mind takes in whatever it has been given and the conscious mind acts upon it. So you can see why what you are feeding your mind is as important as what you feed your body.

Weight Reduction - a Heavy Issue

December 4th, 2008 by Patrick Glancy

You may be asking yourself “Why aren’t traditional diets - even nontraditional diets - working for me? Why can’t I keep the weight off once I lose it?” Through my experience as a certified hypnotherapist, I have found that the main reason why the diets have not helped you to create permanent weight loss changes is because you have not made a lifestyle change. Ok, so maybe you already understand that.

Let me explain further. If a lifestyle change has not been made then your behaviors have not changed and if behaviors have not changed then your thoughts have not changed. If your thoughts have not changed then your perceptions and beliefs have not changed. Those perceptions and beliefs, I speak of, include beliefs about yourself, your body image, your self worth, and also the beliefs and perceptions about your relationship with food. The beliefs and perceptions related to the behaviors that are keeping you heavy can also be connected to a number of other issues: stress, anxiety, how you react to people, places and events around you, fears and phobias. Many of your perceptions/beliefs regarding these issues and others need to be changed on the fundamental level to create the behavioral changes necessary to eliminate the excess body fat.

The process of hypnosis by-passes what is called the critical factor, the “line” between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Your conscious mind is your rational, analytical, and critical area of your brain. Although it needs to operate this way for survival purposes and decision-making, it can also trip us up, getting in the way of our own progress and improvement. The conscious mind acts upon the beliefs that have been imprinted in our subconscious mind.

It is estimated that 75% of our beliefs about ourselves have been imprinted into our subconscious by the age of 7.

If you have been thinking of yourself as fat and all you can think about it is the extra weight, then that is what you will continue to experience in life. You perceive that which you focus on through your mind’s eye. HOWEVER, if through hypnosis you were to implant into your subconscious mind the thoughts of being thin, the positive aspects of being fit, healthy, balanced, and energetic you will be providing new information for your conscious mind to act upon.
